Families demand help with recovering Venezuela's quake victims
Officials are using photos, fingerprints and dental records to identify victims as more than 2,600 people have died, Reuters reported.
On Friday, grieving families crowded the Los Silos port facility in La Guaira, Venezuela, to identify relatives among the 2,645 dead from last week's 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes.
Because the disaster overwhelmed local infrastructure, forensic specialists are using digital images to identify bodies as rapid decomposition accelerates under the sweltering heat.
"This is like a horror movie," said Liliana González, a 60-year-old resident of Catia La Mar, who identified her 37-year-old nephew by a tattoo among the victims.
On Thursday, Interim President Delcy Rodriguez defended her government's response, inviting critics to "audit the reality," though residents in Guaira continue to denounce the lack of support.
Search operations are winding down nine days after the tremors, with officials estimating as many as 50,000 people missing and foreign rescuers reporting no further signs of life.
