'Why we need to tackle the challenges phones pose our children'

  • Researchers at the University of South Florida and Nemours Children's Health conducted the 2025 Life in Media Survey between November 12 and December 9, 2024, surveying over 1,500 kids aged 11 to 13 about their digital media use and wellness.
  • The study aimed to understand the complex effects of smartphone ownership and digital media use on children's sleep quality, mental health, and overall well-being, recognizing that experiences during childhood and adolescence can influence health outcomes later in life.
  • The survey revealed that 78% of respondents have their own smartphone and kids spend an average of 12.3 hours on their smartphone and/or tablet on school days, although some children feel relieved when they cannot use their phones.
  • According to Wendy Rote, USF associate professor of psychology, "Our findings indicate that the effects of smartphone ownership are complex," further stating, "It’s what kids do with cell phones and challenges in regulating their device use, rather than merely owning a smartphone, that may cause difficulties or inversely benefit their lives."
  • While kids with smartphones generally reported higher well-being, better social lives, and were less likely to report feelings of depression or cyberbullying, researchers advised parents to discourage young children from publicly posting on social media, as heavy social media and video game use were associated with negative impacts, including less sleep and increased anxiety.
