UK to provide £2.5m in support to Jamaica after hurricane
The UK has sent emergency supplies and deployed experts to aid disaster relief after Hurricane Melissa caused widespread power outages and flooding, affecting 8,000 British nationals.
- On Tuesday the UK government announced £2.5m in emergency humanitarian funding to Jamaica for shelter kits, water filters and blankets, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said.
- Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with sustained winds of 185mph near New Hope, severely damaging towns and leaving three-quarters of the island without power.
- Specialist Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office teams have been deployed to provide consular assistance, with HMS Trent pre-positioned and 24-hour support for up to 8,000 British nationals in Jamaica.
- The Jamaican government hopes to reopen airports on Thursday to distribute emergency relief, while ShelterBox, Cornwall-based charity, has supplies in Barbados and Panama to support up to 10,000 people.
- Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday Sir Keir Starmer said `The scenes of destruction emerging from Jamaica are truly shocking`, families report blackouts and flash flooding risks continue into Wednesday night.
