Kazakhstan Halts Gas Production Amid Ukraine Drone Attack Fallout
Kazakhstan cut gas intake by a quarter at Karachaganak after the strike, and output fell to about 196,500 barrels per day, the energy minister said.
On Friday, Kazakhstan Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov announced a significant output reduction at the Karachaganak oil and gas field following a Ukrainian drone strike earlier this week on Russia's Orenburg Gas Processing Plant.
The Karachaganak field, one of Kazakhstan's three largest hydrocarbon projects, accounts for 10 percent of the country's oil production and typically sends raw gas to the Orenburg facility for processing.
Output at the field has fallen to 25,000 metric tons per day from 34,000 tons normally, as the facility cannot curtail gas output without also reducing crude oil production.
Although Akkenzhenov noted stable domestic gas supplies, officials have no information on when repair works at the Russian plant will allow operations to resume for the field.
The venture, which includes stakeholders Italy's Eni, UK-based Shell, Chevron, and Lukoil, faces these disruptions as Ukraine continues its drone campaign targeting critical Russian energy infrastructure.
