L.A. Mayor Bass Releases Proposed City Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-2027
The plan keeps city services steady and adds 510 police hires as higher tax revenue helps cover spending.
On Monday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass unveiled a $14.9 billion budget for fiscal year 2026-27, avoiding layoffs while maintaining service levels. The proposal relies on increased tax revenues to fund homelessness, housing, and public safety priorities.
Last year, Bass proposed widespread layoffs to erase a $1 billion spending gap, sparking controversy. The City Council subsequently reworked that plan, shifting funds to different workforce areas to avoid the mayor's initial cuts.
Bass seeks to spend $104 million on Inside Safe, the homelessness initiative, and hire 510 police officers to cover expected departures. The plan allocates about $36 million for sidewalk repairs and wheelchair-accessible curb cuts.
The spending plan now heads to the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee for review. Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky will oversee the committee as it holds hearings over several weeks to analyze the proposal.
This budget arrives as Bass faces four major challengers ahead of the June 2 primary election. Opponents have criticized her management of city services and the cost of Inside Safe, creating political pressure.
