France's Culture Minister to Be Tried on Corruption Charges
FRANCE, JUL 22 – Rachida Dati faces charges of illegal lobbying and accepting €900,000 in lawyer's fees while Carlos Ghosn is accused of financial misconduct and remains a fugitive in Lebanon.
- France's Culture Minister Rachida Dati will face trial on corruption and abuse of authority charges related to her time as a European Parliament member.
- The charges arise from a 2019 probe into claims that Dati received 900,000 euros in legal fees from a Renault-Nissan subsidiary located in the Netherlands during the period of 2010 to 2012, despite not carrying out any work for the company.
- Dati, 59, served as justice minister under Nicolas Sarkozy and was an MEP from 2009 to 2019 while allegedly lobbying illegally for Renault-Nissan at the European Parliament.
- Dati's lawyers Olivier Baratelli and Olivier Pardo said, "We will appeal this decision today," while she declared, "I am not afraid of anything or anyone."
- A hearing scheduled for September 29 will determine the trial date, which may take place following the municipal elections in Paris set for March of the coming year, where Dati intends to run for mayor.
