Juneau braces as Suicide Basin fills again. Here’s what experts know, and don’t know, about glacier outburst flooding in the Mendenhall Valley.

Juneau officials and the Army Corps of Engineers installed miles of flood barriers after Suicide Basin released 16 billion gallons in 2024, with water rising 4-5 feet daily, National Weather Service says.

Barriers have been installed where flooding damaged hundreds of homes last summer. With a release imminent, scientists say the scale of flooding is hard to predict.
