Louisiana Republican Julia Letlow Wins U.S. Senate Race
Letlow led with 56% of the vote after 75% of precincts reported, according to WAFB political analyst Jim Engster.
On Tuesday, Republican U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow won the U.S. Senate election, defeating Democrat Jamie Davis and replacing Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy, who was eliminated in his party's primary earlier this year.
Cassidy's primary defeat followed opposition from within his party, including President Donald Trump, who held a grudge after the senator voted to convict him during an impeachment trial following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Letlow, a former higher education administrator from Monroe, ran on a platform focused on border security, domestic energy production, and lowering family costs. She becomes the first Republican woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Louisiana.
Davis campaigned on strengthening Medicare and Medicaid and raising the federal minimum wage but could not overcome Letlow's margin in the reliably red state. Analysts projected the race for Letlow on Tuesday night.
Serving a six-year term beginning in January 2027, Letlow will join Republican U.S. Sen. John Kennedy in representing Louisiana. Her legislative priorities include federal disaster recovery, flood insurance, and coastal restoration for the state.
