Judge Orders Mental Health Evaluation for the Woman Charged with the Attempted Murder of Rihanna
The judge ordered psychiatric evaluations after defense counsel raised doubts about the defendant’s competence, and the case could lead to indefinite hospitalization if she is found unfit for trial.
On Tuesday, Judge Shannon Cooley paused the prosecution of Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, transferring the case to a mental health court to determine whether the defendant is competent to stand trial.
Police allege Ortiz drove a Tesla to Rihanna and Rocky's Beverly Hills-area property on March 8, firing an AR-15 style rifle that struck an Airstream trailer where the couple sheltered.
Ortiz faces 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts of shooting at an occupied dwelling. Deputy Public Defender Derek Dillman raised doubts about her mental competence.
Cooley ordered Ortiz to remain held on nearly $2 million bail. If found incompetent, she could be held indefinitely in a state hospital until able to face charges.
The defendant is set to appear June 2 in the same courtroom where a judge recently found a man accused of stalking Jennifer Aniston incompetent to stand trial.
