Danny Ford Granted to Stay on Ballot for U.S. Senate Special Republican Primary
Judge Coble said the party’s rules were confusing and unfairly applied, and ordered Ford added to ballots within 24 hours.
- On Tuesday, Aug. 4, Circuit Judge Daniel Coble ordered the South Carolina Republican Party to place Danny Lee Ford II on the special Senate primary ballot, requiring certification within 24 hours.
- The South Carolina Republican Party had disqualified Ford under a rule requiring candidates to have voted in two of the last three statewide primaries, which Judge Coble ruled was "confusing" and overly ambiguous.
- Conway Belangia, the state's elections director, stated the ruling forces all 46 of the state's counties to retool and retest machines, potentially working through the night for early voting on Wednesday, Aug. 5.
- While nearly 400 military and more than 1,500 absentee ballots were already sent without Ford's name, the order only requires his inclusion on in-person and early voting ballots, avoiding replacement of mailed ballots.
- The South Carolina Republican Party plans to appeal the decision, maintaining a First Amendment right to enforce a "minimal objective standard" for candidates, while Ford remains one of 10 total candidates for the Aug. 11 special primary.
