John Caldwell: Man Charged in Connection with Detective's Shooting

The 73-year-old faces terrorism and obstruction charges after the February attempted shooting of a retired PSNI detective, amid a wider ongoing investigation.

  • In a Wednesday statement, the PSNI announced they charged John Charles Coleman, 73, of Lake View Cottages, Ardboe, Dungannon, with terrorist-related offences after his arrest under the Terrorism Act on November 18.
  • Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot several times in Omagh, County Tyrone, in February 2023 while off duty with his young son after coaching a youth football team; he retired last December and received the King's Police Medal in November of last year.
  • CCTV evidence shows John Charles Coleman at another suspect's address and police say communications data and vehicle movements link him to the attack and disposal of Ford Fiesta cars for the New IRA.
  • Coleman appeared via videolink at Strabane Magistrates' Court, where District Judge Alana McSorley agreed bail with conditions including a curfew, daily PSNI reporting, and notifying police of car use; he will appear in Omagh Court on December 9.
  • As is usual procedure, the charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service while the 37-year-old man arrested on November 18 was released to be reported to the PPS; several other individuals charged remain on bail.
