Japan PM says she had 'timely' discussion with Trump ahead of his Xi summit

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met President Donald Trump at the United Nations in New York to coordinate on China, strengthening their alliance two days before Trump's summit with the Chinese President.
Takaichi sought support from Trump after facing Chinese pressure, including restricted rare earth mineral supplies last year following her remarks regarding Taiwan as an existential threat to Japan.
The leaders discussed Japan's $550 billion investment pledge in return for reduced tariffs and Tokyo's potential 3.5 per cent defense spending target, confirming plans to strengthen Japan-US alliance capabilities.
Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Masano Ozaki said Trump and Takaichi "discussed efforts aimed at strengthening the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-US alliance, and confirmed that these efforts will be advanced." The leaders also had a "frank exchange of views."
As Trump prepares for his summit with Beijing, the leaders addressed the "current global financial situation," following unprecedented pressure from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates.
