Taiwan to maintain 'close contact' with US on arms sales
Taipei said the U.S. government and Congress support Taiwan's defense as it pushes ahead with two arms packages worth $25 billion.
- On Wednesday, Taiwan defence ministry deputy spokesperson Chiao Fu-chun said Taipei will maintain close contact with the US to promote planned arms sales according to plan ahead of the Washington summit.
- President Donald Trump approved an $11 billion arms package for Taiwan in December, but a second $14 billion deal remains 'in abeyance' following his May visit to Beijing. Chinese President Jinping is expected to press Trump to halt further sales.
- Taiwan's army showcased a new eight-wheeled armoured combat vehicle fitted with a 105mm gun during live-fire exercises in Tainan on Wednesday. The military also displayed US-made Lockheed Martin-made HIMARS rockets.
- Maintaining Indo-Pacific security is a 'common interest of democratic nations,' Chiao said, as the US government and Congress have repeatedly expressed support for Taiwan's defence. Taiwan's government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims.
- China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control and repeatedly demands an end to US arms sales. The Chinese military operates around the island on an almost daily basis.
