Fiji Split with Coach Byrne over 'New Direction'
Fiji Rugby said it will appoint interim coaches and search for a new head coach after Byrne stepped down to allow a new direction.
- On Wednesday, Fiji Rugby Union announced head coach Mick Byrne stepped down effective immediately. The decision followed discussions on the national squad's future direction, according to FRU chief executive Koli Sewabu.
- Australian coach Byrne spent five years working with Fijian teams, including a two-year stint leading the national squad. He previously coached the Fijian Drua before taking the top role.
- "Mick has been fully committed to his role and remains dedicated to the players and staff," Sewabu said. Both parties agreed to part ways to ensure the program continues in the direction Fiji Rugby has set.
- The FRU will begin appointing an interim coaching team and new head coach ahead of Nations Championship matches. Fiji faces Wales in Cardiff on July 4, England in Liverpool on July 11, and Scotland in Edinburgh on July 18.
- Beyond the upcoming European tour, the national body intends to lock in a permanent head coach to lead the Flying Fijians to the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Fiji is placed in Pool C in Australia.
