Irish UNIFIL Troops Safe After IDF Drops Grenades Nearby

Two grenades exploded near UN peacekeepers in Maroun ar-Ras, with Irish troops safe and all force protection measures in place, UNIFIL reported.

  • On Thursday, the Israel Defence Forces dropped grenades near UNIFIL peacekeepers working alongside Lebanese soldiers to protect civilian workers in Maroun ar-Ras.
  • UNIFIL said it had informed the Israel Defence Forces and demanded they stop firing, calling on them to cease attacks on peacekeepers, civilians, and Lebanese soldiers to allow mandated tasks.
  • At around 11.30am, peacekeepers at two sites heard a grenade explode near an excavator about 500 metres away, and about 20 minutes later a drone dropped a grenade that exploded 20 metres above their heads.
  • The Defence Forces confirmed all Irish personnel from the 126th Infantry Battalion are safe and accounted for, with no injuries and force protection measures in place, stating `Our soldiers continue to operate effectively, fulfil their mandate and are committed to their important role to provide stability and act as an independent observer in the region`.
  • The operation is slated to end in 2027, closing a mission Irish troops have served in for nearly 50 years, after an August UN Security Council vote to withdraw UNIFIL forces.
