Israel is building a miles-long earthen barrier inside Gaza, entrenching its division
Israel says the barrier will block infiltration and protect troops as more than 23 kilometers have been built inside Gaza, satellite images show.
- The Israeli military confirmed to The Associated Press it is building a giant earthen barrier separating over 50% of the Gaza Strip it controls from the rest of the territory, citing a need to protect Israeli troops and communities.
- Under the Oct ceasefire deal with Hamas, the line was envisioned as a temporary division pending Israeli withdrawal. As the truce stagnates, the barrier's expansion fuels Palestinian fears that the line is morphing into a permanent border across Gaza.
- According to satellite imagery from Planet Labs PBC, more than 23 kilometers of the barrier have been constructed in recent months. The earthen wall runs through Palestinian communities demolished by the military, equivalent to over half the length of Gaza.
- A berm network in southern Gaza extended by more than 2 kilometers in two weeks this month, according to Planet Labs PBC. The construction splices Israel-controlled ruins of Rafah from Muwasi, home to some of the largest Palestinian tent camps.
- Implementation of the ceasefire deal has been stalled for months, leaving the division in place. The agreement originally intended for Israel to withdraw its troops to the very edges of Gaza, to be replaced by an international security force.
