- During the trial in Duesseldorf, Issa Al Hasan made a full confession and accepted responsibility, with prosecutors and judge Winfried van der Grinten saying he endorsed IS goals and acted from treacherous motives after contacts with Islamic State group representatives.
- The judges in Duesseldorf ordered life imprisonment with preventive detention, found particularly serious guilt, awarded victims pain-and-suffering sums of 30,000 to 120,000 euros but said those sums could not be realized.
- The attack intensified nationwide debate over refugee and asylum policy ahead of Germany's national election, benefiting the CDU/CSU and the AfD, which more than doubled its vote share to over 20 percent.
