Iranian state TV issues first official death toll from recent protests, saying 3,117 were killed
Iran's official toll of 3,117 deaths from protests is disputed by rights groups who claim thousands more died amid a violent crackdown and internet blackout.
- On Wednesday night, Iranian state television broadcast a Martyrs Foundation statement saying 3,117 people were killed during protests that began Dec. 28.
- Protests began over economic pressures and escalated into mass antigovernment actions against the clerical leadership, while an internet shutdown since Jan. 8 lasting over 300 hours hindered casualty verification.
- Data from monitoring groups indicate the Human Rights Activists News Agency said 4,560 deaths and nearly 26,500 arrests, while rights groups documented security forces using live fire on protesters.
- Military posturing increased as Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister, warned of "firing back with everything we have if we come under renewed attack" while USS Abraham Lincoln moved west.
- The toll exceeds any unrest in decades and Norway-based Iran Human Rights verified 3,428 deaths, warning estimates may range between 5,000 and 20,000.
