Iran Player Accused of 'Gun Celebration' in World Cup Controversy
Mohammad Mohebi scored Iran’s equalizer and then drew scrutiny after appearing to mimic firing a gun with his right hand.
On Tuesday, Iran opened their politically-charged World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, though goalscorer Mohammad Mohebi faced accusations of performing a "gun celebration" after his 64th-minute goal.
Tensions remained high at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where spectators booed the Iranian anthem before kick-off and displayed banned pre-revolutionary "Lion and Sun" flags despite FIFA's efforts to confiscate them.
Iran head coach Amir Ghalenoei claimed officials ordered the team to depart Los Angeles immediately after the match, stating, "They didn't even give us time to recover," before forcing an unplanned return to Tijuana, Mexico.
Mohebi declined to elaborate on his actions following the final whistle, while teammate Ramin Rezaeian admitted his goal celebration carried political undertones, telling reporters, "It's something political."
The team's participation comes amid significant adversity following February's U.S.-Israeli strikes, which triggered visa disruptions and forced the squad to relocate training from the United States to Tijuana, Mexico.
Escape instead of celebration – while other teams were celebrating, Iran's World Cup player Los Angeles had to leave hastily after 2:2 against New Zealand. A bad picture for Gianni Infantino and the tournament as a whole.
