IOC leader Coventry warns of ‘uncomfortable’ change coming to Olympics programs

Kirsty Coventry initiated a review of over 450 medal events across 40+ sports to ensure the Olympic Games evolve and remain relevant for future generations, with results due this year.

  • Kirsty Coventry cautioned on Tuesday in Milan, Italy, that the Olympic programme will undergo changes that will be uncomfortable for some ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
  • The review Coventry launched last June covers more than 450 medal events from over 40 sports federations under the Fit For The Future agenda, with results due later this year.
  • Coventry said, `We have to be honest about what works and sometimes more importantly what doesn't`, highlighting the review led by Karl Stoss, chair of the Olympic programme working group, to evaluate Sports relevance and size.
  • Coventry warned this could force traditional events to defend their place as her call for balance risks modern pentathlon at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, while Brisbane 2032 organisers say they do not yet know which sports will be reviewed.
  • Los Angeles 2028 organisers already expanded their programme to six new sports, pushing its athlete quota from an ideal 10,500 to 13,000 while relying heavily on existing venues, and Coventry stresses keeping the Games inspiring for young people with more sports, less politics.
