INEC to use NIN verification against duplicate voter registration
- On Wednesday, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan met with NIMC Director-General Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote in Abuja to discuss strengthening their partnership on voter register integrity.
- This collaboration follows the National Identity Management Commission Act 2026, signed by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2026, which designates NIMC as the home of Nigeria's Digital Public Infrastructure .
- INEC will leverage NIMC's database of over 136 million National Identification Numbers to continuously audit and cleanse the national voter register, tackling duplicate registrations and identity theft.
- The Commission has integrated the NIN into the online Continuous Voter Registration platform, requiring applicants to use their identification for verification and simplifying the registration process.
- Responding to advances in artificial intelligence, both institutions plan to strengthen identity management and cybersecurity systems, as Coker-Odusote noted the Act transformed NIMC into Nigeria's foundational digital identity authority.
