Indian Trade Secretary Rajesh Agrawal Says First Phase of US Trade Deal Finalised
On Thursday, India's trade secretary Rajesh Agrawal announced the first phase of a trade deal between India and the United States is finalized and undergoing legal drafting.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit India and Uzbekistan from October 17 to 22, meeting government and business leaders to discuss energy cooperation, commercial investment, and broader economic ties.
India is seeking preferential market access and greater tariff stability under the proposed agreement, with Agrawal stating officials anticipate concluding and signing the deal at the "earliest possible time."
Ajay Srivastava of the Global Trade Research Initiative warned the United States could use tariff threats to press New Delhi into an "unequal trade deal" despite optimism over diesel purchases.
Relations have been rocky this past year, strained by a military attack on a ship off Oman and President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering an India-Pakistan ceasefire.
