India Test Fires Ballistic Missiles Prithvi-II, Agni-1 in Odisha's Chandipur After Akash Prime Trial in Ladakh

CHANDIPUR, ODISHA, INDIA, JUL 17 – The tests validated all operational parameters of nuclear-capable Prithvi-II and Agni-I missiles, strengthening India’s strategic deterrence as per the Ministry of Defence.

  • On July 17, India conducted successful launches of the Prithvi-II and Agni-I missiles from the testing facility located off the coast of Chandipur in Odisha.
  • These launches followed the July 16 successful destruction of two high-speed unmanned aerial targets by the upgraded Akash Prime missile in Ladakh near the Line of Actual Control.
  • The Akash Prime system has been enhanced with a locally created radio frequency seeker and tailored to function effectively at altitudes exceeding 4,500 metres, reflecting improvements made in response to user input.
  • The Agni-I missile can transport nuclear or conventional warheads, has a range between 700 and 900 kilometers, and supports a payload up to 1,000 kilograms, while the Prithvi-II missile carries a maximum of 500 kilograms over a distance of approximately 350 kilometers.
  • The Defence Ministry stated that all operational and technical parameters were validated during tests conducted under the Strategic Forces Command, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh calling it a "remarkable achievement.
