Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh embarks on a landmark official visit to Sri Lanka, the first by an Indian Defence Minister in thirty-eight years. This visit focuses on enhancing regional maritime security and resolving fishermen's concerns. Additionally, it has the potential to amplify joint military exercises and training programs, highlighting Sri Lanka's crucial role in major sea routes.
Resolving India Sri Lanka Fisheries Dispute: Rajnath Singh advocated for a humanitarian solution to the India-Sri Lanka fishermen dispute in Colombo. He said this is a sensitive issue related to the livelihoods of coastal fishermen and should be resolved through maritime law, mutual cooperation, monitoring illegal fishing, and joint maritime security in the Indian Ocean.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized on enhancing India-Sri Lanka maritime cooperation in Sri Lanka. He spoke of resolution of fishermen disputes, development of ports and joint disaster relief arrangements.
