India Resumes Travel Visas for Bangladeshi Citizens: Why Were They Frozen for Nearly 2 Years?
Dinesh Trivedi said applications can be submitted from June 28, while urgent medical visas will continue for Bangladeshi nationals.
On Thursday, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi announced the resumption of travel visas for Bangladeshi nationals, with applications opening June 28 at the Indian Visa Centre in Dhaka.
Travel visas were halted nearly two years ago as relations deteriorated during the Muhammad Yunus-led interim regime, following the August 2024 ouster of Sheikh Hasina that strained India-Bangladesh ties.
Processing will resume at five Indian Visa Centre locations: Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Khulna. The envoy noted that urgent medical visas have continued to be provided for humanitarian reasons throughout the suspension.
On Wednesday, New Delhi granted Trivedi the status of a Union Minister for ceremonial functions, and he presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin as the first politician serving as Indian High Commissioner.
Ties have improved since Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office earlier this year, and Trivedi expressed hope that the visa resumption would "further strengthen people-to-people ties" between the two sovereign nations.
