Philippines, India Mark Strategic Leap in 75 Years of Ties Amid China Tensions
DELHI, INDIA, AUG 5 – India becomes the fifth strategic partner of the Philippines with agreements on defence cooperation, trade, and maritime security amid regional tensions, officials said.
- On August 5, 2025, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India as the Philippines’ fifth strategic partner at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
- During his state visit, Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. highlighted efforts to diversify alliances amid South China Sea tensions, with defence cooperation growing rapidly in recent years.
- The partnership institutionalises mechanisms such as the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee and Joint Defence Industry and Logistics Committee , and enhances defence cooperation including BrahMos exports.
- Alongside the partnership launch, 13 agreements covering defence to technology were exchanged, the Plan of Action adopted, and direct Air India flights from October 1 announced.
- Additionally, negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement are underway, and agreements cover science and technology, digital technologies, outer space, and cultural exchanges.
