India, Japan Deepen Maritime Security Ties, Agree to Explore Joint Naval Shipbuilding
- On Thursday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi signed a Memorandum of Arrangement on Maritime Security Cooperation in New Delhi, establishing a framework for deepened naval operational ties.
- Reaffirming their commitment to the 'Japan-India Special Strategic and Global Partnership,' the ministers sought to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region amid heightened global tensions and opposition to unilateral attempts to change the status quo.
- Both nations agreed to 'maximize synergies to enhance mine countermeasures capabilities' and explore joint naval shipbuilding and design, leveraging Japan's technological expertise alongside India's production capabilities under the 'Make in India' framework.
- Singh and Koizumi affirmed they would strengthen coordination for the protection of Sea Lines of Communications through mutual naval visits, joint exercises, and logistical support, including use of ports and repair facilities.
- The countries will accelerate discussions for the fourth Japan-India Foreign and Defence Ministerial Dialogue, or '2+2', in Tokyo later this year, while deepening defence research cooperation between the Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency.
