DRDO successfully tests maiden flight trials of Stratoshperic Airship platform
- On May 3, DRDO successfully performed the inaugural flight test of its high-altitude airship at the Sheopur testing facility in Madhya Pradesh.
- The trials were conducted following development by DRDO’s research center in Agra specializing in aerial delivery systems, aiming to enhance aerospace surveillance capabilities at high altitudes.
- During a 62-minute flight, the airship reached approximately 17 kilometres altitude while testing envelope pressure control, emergency deflation systems, and onboard instrumentation.
- Data gathered from onboard sensors will support the creation of high-fidelity simulation models for future long-endurance stratospheric airship missions, a milestone noted by DRDO leadership.
- The successful test positions India among a select group of countries with homegrown lighter-than-air high-altitude platforms, boosting the nation's ability to conduct advanced surveillance and remote sensing operations.
