‘Problems Aren’t Created by All of Us…’: Putin Aide Lavrov’s Subtle Jibe During Meet with Jaishankar
Ministers will discuss BRICS at 20 and reforms to global governance as India hosts the bloc’s foreign ministers before the 2026 summit.
On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar began hosting the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi, following productive talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday.
Jaishankar noted that political cooperation between India and Russia is increasingly valuable amid shifting geopolitical tensions and the Ukraine conflict, as the leaders discussed advancing bilateral ties.
India, as the 2026 BRICS Chair, is hosting the conclave with the 11-member grouping representing around 49.5 per cent of the global population and 40 per cent of global GDP.
Lavrov guaranteed that India's interests in Russian energy supplies would not suffer despite external pressures, while praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "one of the most energetic leaders the world has ever known."
Representatives from Brazil, South Africa, and the Maldives have arrived in New Delhi, where BRICS member and partner countries will participate in sessions themed "BRICS at 20" to discuss global governance reforms.
