Women in Darfur report rape, lost children amid Sudan violence, UN says
The Rapid Support Forces used rape as a weapon during their 500-day siege of El Fasher, forcing 89,000 people to flee amid starvation and deadly attacks, the UN said.
- On Tuesday, the United Nations reported thousands of women and girls fleeing El Fasher, North Darfur face rape, starvation and bombing while seeking refuge.
- The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces recently captured El Fasher after a 500-day siege, taking the last Sudanese Armed Forces stronghold in North Darfur amid accusations of using rape as a weapon of war.
- On the ground, women told U.N. officials that every step to fetch water, firewood, or stand in food lines carries a high risk of sexual violence, said Anna Mutavati.
- An estimated 89,000 people have fled El Fasher to Tawila, Korma and Malit where humanitarian resources are scarce, and the World Health Organization reported more than 460 patients killed and six healthcare workers taken.
- The U.N. says mounting evidence indicates systematic rape and satellite imagery shows widespread summary executions and likely war crimes by RSF members.
