BEIJING, CHINA, AUG 5 – Authorities evacuated over 82,000 residents from flood-prone areas after heavy rain caused at least 44 deaths and exposed disaster readiness gaps, officials said.
- Amid the looming downpours, Chinese authorities evacuated over 82,000 people across Beijing from vulnerable areas by 9.00 pm Monday.
- Amid forecasts of heavy rain, the municipal weather service issued a red alert, forecasting heavy rain from noon on Monday until Tuesday morning, following floods last week that killed at least 44 people.
- Amid the flooding, more than 3,200 construction sites suspended operations, and 201 scenic areas, 3,480 homestay businesses, and 245 campsites were closed.
- In response to the flooding, the Beijing government activated its highest emergency flood-response level and issued flood warnings for Miyun, Fangshan, Mentougou and Huairou districts.
- Upcoming rains forecast heavy rainfall from Monday evening through Tuesday, and flood prevention teams will continue across the regions.
