In Chicago immigration crackdown, agents raid daycare, senior living center
- Wednesday morning, a day care worker was arrested at Rayito de Sol Spanish Immersion Early Learning Center in the 2500-block of West Addison Street as children and teachers arrived.
- Federal officials contend the detention followed a targeted traffic stop and pursuit after the vehicle's male driver refused to stop, and the Colombian woman alleged by DHS was arrested inside a daycare vestibule, the department alleges.
- Video obtained by local reporter Tahman Bradley and parents captures officers dragging the woman shortly after 7 a.m., with at least one vest marked ICE while witnesses said agents did not show a warrant or check her papers.
- Following the arrest, Rayito de Sol closed for the day as 47th Ward Alderman Matt Martin said, `You had agents with guns who were walking around the facility with teachers inside, with children inside and so we are of course demanding that she be released immediately.`
- As part of a broader crackdown, Operation Midway Blitz has led to more than 3,000 arrests in the Chicago area since early September, drawing criticism from local leaders and courts.
