In 1980, MGR regime stunned the State by terminating the services of Village Officers

In a drastic action, the AIADMK government promulgated an ordinance on the night of November 13 and at one stroke removed about 24,000 traditional officers, who were replaced by Village Administrative Officers to be recruited through a routine test. The merits and demerits of the decision are still being debated among members of the public
