iFixit Tears Down the iPhone Air, Finds that It’s Mostly Battery

iFixit praised the iPhone Air for easy battery swaps and component access, noting Apple's use of smart adhesives and repair manuals from launch, scoring it 7 out of 10.

  • IFixit conducted a detailed disassembly of the newly released iPhone Air, introduced earlier this month as part of the iPhone 17 lineup, and assigned it a tentative repairability rating of 7 out of 10.
  • Apple redesigned the iPhone Air with a titanium frame, shifted the logic board to the top, and enlarged the battery area to improve durability and repairability.
  • The device contains a metal-covered 12.26 Wh battery that takes up about two-thirds of the center area and is secured with specialized adhesive strips that release when energized, allowing for a simple and safe replacement process.
  • Elizabeth Chamberlain, iFixit's Director of Sustainability, noted that the iPhone Air measures 6.5 mm in thickness, making it slightly slimmer than Samsung's Galaxy S25 Edge, while still incorporating modular components and allowing relatively easy access to the battery. She also pointed out that Apple continues to use pentalobe screws in its design.
  • The teardown suggests the Air balances thinness and repairability but notes vulnerabilities at the top and bottom and awaits Apple's parts availability to finalize the repair score.
