The Trump Administration Will Hand over the Personal Data of 79 Million Medicaid Recipients to ICE
NEW HAMPSHIRE, JUL 17 – ICE has access to millions of Medicaid data points from immigrants enrolled in New Hampshire's Granite Advantage program, where 7.4% of adults participate, officials said.
- On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security and CMS signed the data-sharing agreement, granting ICE data on 79 million enrollees and limiting access until September 9.
- Undocumented immigrants cannot enroll in Medicaid, lawfully present migrants need five years' residency, and the agreement bars downloading individual records, Associated Press.
- Immigration agents will use it to locate undocumented immigrants, and Representative Pramila Jayapal called it a `weaponization of data`.
- In a statement, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said agencies `are exploring an initiative to ensure that illegal aliens are not receiving Medicaid benefits that are meant for law-abiding Americans`.
- It remains unclear whether DHS has accessed the CMS information, and last April, the IRS shared data with ICE, setting a precedent.
