ICE agent fatally shoots Mexican motorist in Texas during vehicle stop, agency says
Federal officials said the man rammed an ICE vehicle and used his car against an officer before the fatal shooting.
On Tuesday, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston's East End during a targeted enforcement operation in the 6800 block of Canal Street.
According to the agency, Araujo "rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle" in an attempt to evade arrest at around 6:50 a.m.
The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General are leading the investigation into the shooting. ICE stated the officer fired "in self-defense," striking Araujo, who was transported to Ben Taub Hospital.
Representative Sylvia Garcia called for a full investigation, stating "the facts must be independently and thoroughly investigated, including the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force." The victim's family and community deserve transparency.
Critics including the League of United Latin American Citizens are demanding transparency, citing a pattern of ICE involvement in fatal shootings. Past agency statements regarding similar incidents have been challenged by video evidence.
