'I did not do this lightly': Victoria mayor pulls Palestine item from city council agenda
Alto said the item was too divisive and lacked civil tone, while about a dozen other speakers remained on the agenda.
Victoria Mayor Alto pulled a public presentation from the council agenda for Thursday, citing procedural protocols and arguing the materials were neither civil nor kind.
The presentation addressed Gaza, an international conflict Alto argued brought matters far beyond the Council's capacity or authority to address.
Alto described the submission as containing accusations of a very dramatic nature. A dozen remaining speakers submitted rebuttals referencing the mayor's support for Chabad on Vancouver Island and support of genocide in Gaza.
With the presentation removed, the scheduled speaker lost their opportunity to address the Council. Alto informed Council of her decision earlier Thursday, allowing the final meeting to proceed as planned.
Victoria City Hall protocols mandate speakers honour civil discourse, respect and inclusion. This final Council session Thursday includes a Victoria Conservatory of Music performance and allows public speakers up to five minutes each.
