Hundreds march in Kathmandu for Nepal’s Pride Month
Hundreds joined the march as Nepal’s government has expanded protections for sexual minorities and allowed same-sex marriage.
On Saturday, hundreds of members of the LGBTQ community marched through Kathmandu to celebrate Pride Month, demonstrating the visibility of Nepal's growing sexual minorities.
A 2007 court decision required the government to make changes in favor of LGBTQ people, followed by the 2015 constitution explicitly prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.
People who do not identify as female or male can now choose "third gender" on passports and government documents, while Prime Minister Balendra Shah formed the Ministry of Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security.
Nepal became one of the first in Asia to allow same-sex marriage, positioning the nation as a regional leader in LGBTQ rights and providing significant gains for the community.
Constitutional protections ensure the rights of sexual minorities remain a focus as the community continues advocating for equality and recognition throughout the country.
