'Huge vote of confidence' as data centre giant announces £4bn British investment

Equinix will double its UK processing power with a £4bn investment in a 250MW data centre, supporting thousands of jobs and using 100% renewable energy by 2030.

  • Recently, Equinix confirmed a multi‑billion‑pound UK data centre project at South Mimms, Hertfordshire, with 250 megawatts capacity aiming to double UK processing power by 2030.
  • Last year, a government estimate framed national capacity at around 1,566MW as the AI boom drove demand for larger sites, with Labour-controlled Hertsmere council approving the project on 'grey belt' land.
  • Air cooling and water‑saving design will limit extra local water demand, with Equinix planning a biodiversity net gain of at least 10% and 54% open space, Andrew Higgins said.
  • The scheme will support hundreds of construction roles and thousands of ongoing jobs in London and the City, with plans to start before the end of 2026 or early 2027, Ms Kendall said it was a "really important investment here from a major company, and they want to help build the infrastructure for the future."
  • With UK energy bills already high, more data centres risk raising local costs while Equinix benefits from a pre-existing site connection to the National Grid near the M25 and A1.
