Household water bills to rise for millions of UK customers
Household bills will rise by £33 annually on average to fund £20 billion in upgrades aimed at securing water supplies and reducing sewage discharges, Water UK said.
- From April, household water bills across England and Wales will rise by an average of 5.4%, adding around £33 a year and increasing the average bill to £639, prompting calls for a "stronger safety net".
- Ofwat approved a multi‑year settlement allowing bills to rise by an average 36% between 2025 and 2030, with around 20% front‑loaded into last April's rise; Water UK said water companies will invest around £20 billion over 2026 and 2027.
- At company level, rises range sharply from Affinity Water's 13% to Thames Water's 0.4%, with United Utilities raising bills by 9% to £660.
- Help measures are being expanded alongside the increases, with more than two million households receiving help and an additional 300,000 expected to qualify over the coming year, while Yorkshire Water pledges £375m to support 345,000 customers.
- Critics note a sharp rise in complaints to the regulator, which increased 51% in 2025, and call for a stronger safety net as Consumer Council for Water warns social tariffs vary by postcode.
