Hong Kong lawmakers reject a bill recognizing same-sex partnerships
On Wednesday, Hong Kong's Legislative Council rejected a government proposal aimed at providing certain limited legal recognitions for same-sex couples.
The bill followed a 2023 court order for an alternate framework recognizing same-sex couples' rights after a legal bid led by activist Jimmy Sham.
Rights activist Jimmy Sham, previously jailed under the national security law, said the court's demand remains and authorities should learn and try again.
Kevin Wong, a 54-year-old arts administrator personally affected by the bill due to his partner's 2021 suicide, expressed worry about an unfavourable environment ahead and found healing in storytelling.
The bill's defeat dealt a stinging blow to the LGBTQ community, reinforcing doubts about future advocacy and leaving same-sex couples vulnerable to rights denial in medical and funeral matters.
