Fundraiser Launched to Buy Belfast 'Knife Attack Hero' a Pint
On Monday, 32-year-old Matt McKiernan, a removals company owner, intervened in a stabbing on Kinnaird Avenue in North Belfast, using a hurling stick to help disarm the attacker and protect victim Stephen Ogilvie.
After witnessing the assault while driving to a petrol station with his friend Andre, McKiernan acted instinctively, retrieving a hurley from his car boot following his son's training session and striking the attacker.
Police charged a 30-year-old Sudanese man with attempted murder, possession of a bladed article, and making threats to kill; the suspect is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates' Court.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn praised the bystanders in the House of Commons, stating they "showed the very best of humanity" after DUP leader Gavin Robinson tabled an urgent question.
While Ogilvie remains hospitalized with serious injuries to his eyes, face, and back, McKiernan rejected the hero label, emphasizing his primary concern was preventing further harm to the victim.
