In 2018, an outbreak of the Andes virus was recorded in Patagonia, the same one that has been detected in the Hondius ship. In that case, in which more than thirty people were infected, the patient zero was identified and it was discovered that there is no need for close contact to spread the disease.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the government has coordinated with the WHO regarding the Hantavirus case on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The Ministry of Health is now preparing screening measures and strengthening surveillance to prevent the virus from spreading to Indonesia.
A Swiss man returning from a trip to South America has been hospitalized in Zurich for treatment of the Andes virus, which can be transmitted from person to person. This case, linked to the ship where three people died, has raised concerns about the spread of the outbreak to land, prompting authorities to initiate contact tracing and strict monitoring procedures.
