Milwaukee pays tribute to Bob Uecker in Brewers' first home game since his death

  • The Milwaukee Brewers honored Bob Uecker, who died on January 16 at the age of 90, at their home opener against the Kansas City Royals on Monday at American Family Field.
  • The tributes followed Uecker's passing after he battled small cell lung cancer and after he broadcast Brewers games for 54 seasons.
  • The tributes included jersey patches, a moment of silence, a banner signed by fans, Uecker's signature etched into the outfield grass, the grounds crew decorating the outfield grass with Uecker's signature, a special custard flavor at Kopp's, and a tarp with Uecker's famous line, 'I must be in the front row'.
  • Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio wore a plaid blazer as a tribute, and fans decorated a statue of Uecker with beer cans, with David Horton saying, 'He was the voice of our childhood summers,' and Christian Yelich saying, 'Obviously we all miss him and wish he was here'.
  • The Brewers are converting 1,600 seats into office space for baseball operations, but Schlesinger indicated the ballpark's capacity will remain north of 40,000, and they will host a full public Celebration of Life ceremony in August to further honor Uecker, whose spirit, according to Yelich, will remain with the team.
