Hamas rejects UN Gaza resolution, says international force would become party to conflict
The U.N. resolution authorizes a 20,000-troop force to demilitarize Gaza and oversee governance until 2027 despite Hamas opposition and abstentions from Russia and China.
- The United Nations Security Council approved a U.S.-authored resolution creating an International Stabilization Force to oversee Gaza's demilitarization and borders on Monday.
- With nearly all hostages returned, post-ceasefire plans involve a technocratic government of Palestinian and international experts initially governing Gaza Strip before transferring authority to the Palestinian Authority.
- Hamas forcefully rejected the resolution, saying it `strips it of its neutrality` and Israel Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed continued IDF targeting of Hamas tunnels and fighters.
- Implementation hinges on Israel Defense Forces withdrawal and Hamas disarmament, but both refuse unconditional commitment; the Palestinian Authority welcomed the initiative while U.N. language on Palestinian self-determination remains vague.
