Gunmen kill at least 40 people in northeastern Nigeria, Amnesty International says
Police said the attackers looted shops and set homes ablaze, while Amnesty International said the death toll later rose far above the initial count.
On Friday, October 23, 2026, gunmen attacked Binnari village in Taraba state, Nigeria, killing at least 40 people according to Amnesty International, though police initially confirmed only 10 deaths.
Northern Nigeria has experienced a surge in attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs known as bandits, who frequently raid villages to abduct residents and steal livestock, establishing a pattern of recurring violence in the region.
The attackers invaded the village with heavy gunfire and looted food items from shops, police said, while homes were set ablaze during the assault that left residents fleeing and some persons reported missing.
Amnesty International condemned the attack on Saturday, calling for accountability and urging authorities to demonstrate commitment to protecting lives in the face of systematic violence and impunity.
Security agencies remain on red alert with joint reinforcement teams comprising police, military and other security forces deployed to the area to prevent further attacks as the full scope of casualties emerges.
Fifty people were killed on Friday in an attack by an armed gang on a village in eastern Nigeria, news agency AFP reports, based on testimonies from survivors.
