Ebola scientists to probe Nigeria case origin, Africa CDC says

The team will examine whether genomic links point to an indirect transmission chain as Congo’s Bundibugyo outbreak has spread to three African countries, officials said.

  • Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya announced a team of scientists will travel to Abuja, Nigeria, to investigate the origin of the country's first Ebola case in over a decade.
  • The Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Congo has caused nearly 10,000 cases and more than 4,600 deaths, spreading to Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda despite no approved vaccine or treatment.
  • Genomic sequencing showed the viruses infecting the Nigerian and Kenyan patients were closely related, though the Nigerian patient, who traveled through Entebbe Airport on October 3, does not recall meeting the deceased Kenyan patient.
  • After tensions last week regarding infection origins, Kaseya said all involved countries are now collaborating, noting, "We have so many unknowns," about how the virus spread.
  • Congolese expert Jean-Jacques Muyembe will lead the investigation team in Abuja to trace contacts and ensure the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record is not spreading silently in undiscovered locations.
