Military Ups Death Toll in Mali Attack to 54
The army said the victims were buried on site and nine survivors were evacuated to Menaka as patrols continued in the region.
Mali's armed forces reported on Saturday that they discovered 54 bodies in a camp in Tagadayat following attacks in the northeastern Menaka region targeting camps housing the Daoussahak community.
The attacks appear to be retaliation for abuses allegedly carried out by pro-government militia MSA and Russia's Africa Corps against civilians suspected of being informants for the Islamic State Sahel Province.
During the Sunday attacks, Islamic State Sahel Province fighters set houses on fire and stole livestock, forcing hundreds of civilians to flee; nine survivors were evacuated to Menaka by armed forces.
This violence compounds insecurity in West Africa's Sahel region, where Islamic State Sahel Province and al Qaeda-linked JNIM have clashed hundreds of times since 2019, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths.
Mali has faced a security crisis since 2012 involving jihadist fighters, separatist groups, and criminal gangs, with regional insurgent clashes historically resulting in more than 2,000 deaths according to conflict monitoring data.
