Attackers kill 60 people in Ethiopia's conflict-hit Oromiya region, Orthodox church says
The church said 14 believers were killed in one district and 46 in another, while more than 20 homes were burned.
On Monday, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church announced that at least 60 people were killed in two separate attacks in the Oromiya region on October 20 and October 24.
The Oromiya regional government blamed the Coalition for the Survival of Ethiopian Popular Forces, formed last month to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed; the OLA rejected the accusations.
Eyewitnesses described the violence as an ambush that burned more than 20 homes and hospitalized over 20 people. Patriarch Abuna Matias condemned it as 'totally unacceptable according to any religious teaching or principle of Human Rights.'
The Church stated that 'so far there has been no solution' to security concerns repeatedly raised with government authorities. A church official described the attacks in the Shirka district as a 'massacre' that security forces could not stop.
According to the Ethiopian Human Rights Council, more than 450 people were killed in attacks in the area over the previous four years, often targeting the Orthodox community in what the council described as religiously motivated violence.
Although there has been no claim of responsibility for the attacks so far, according to reports, a local official blamed a newly formed alliance of rebel organizations for the killings, including the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA).
