Guardsman who survived Washington shooting gives thumbs up, still in serious condition
Andrew Wolfe, seriously wounded in a D.C. shooting that killed Sarah Beckstrom, showed signs of improvement, West Virginia Governor said about the National Guard member deployed to fight crime.
- On Dec. 1 West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Andrew Wolfe, 24, U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. and West Virginia Guard member, signaled improvement to nurses after the Nov. 26 attack.
- West Virginia National Guard members were deployed to Washington, D.C. as part of an effort ordered by President Donald Trump to help fight crime, and approximately 170 National Guard members from West Virginia remained deployed with the governor saying the troops volunteered for the mission.
- Authorities charged Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, with first-degree murder after the attack that also killed Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, on Thanksgiving.
- Gov. Morrisey expressed sympathy, saying Wolfe's mother asked for prayers and West Virginians held vigils in Martinsburg, a city of about 18,000, while he said, 'My heart goes out to the family of the two individuals who were despicably gunned down in Washington, D.C'.
- School leaders urged residents to keep the Guardsmen in their thoughts as the Musselman High School community stands proud of service and calls for West Virginia unity as one family.
